George Cables, associated with Dexter Gordon for many years, is found here in a tribute to his old boss. In fact, the whole band are alumni from that same band with Rufus Reid on bass and Victor Lewis on drums rounding out the rhythmn section.
All of the tunes are repertoire performed regularily with Dexter. Even his signature habit of reciting the first eight bars of a tune as an introduction is replicated here for "Polkadots and Moonbeams". The band is in fine fettle, take a close listen to Victor Lewis. He has that special time feel that allows him to propel the many fine groups he has performed with over the years. Cables, of course, sounds great as swings tastefully but never trys to overdo it. Pick this disc up while we still have stock!
