Sonia Cat-Berro is a jazz singer. She has got the swing, the rhythm and the phrasing it takes and, what is more, a sensual approach, but however much we say we will not have said it all. If she has honed her skills from those who preceded her, she is essentially a jazz singer firmly anchored in her era and has evolved her own aesthetic from the modern jazz found in clubs today. Her music is state-of-the-art, it is hip as well as pop, jazz, a little funky - in short, there's a whole lot of groove.
She is nourished by the music of the here and now, of the New York sound of contemporaries such as Mark Turner, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Fly and Meldhau. Sonia Cat-Berro is most definitely a part of this young jazz generation that finds its inspiration as much in Joshua Redman as in those monuments of the English pop scene such as Pink Floyd. All it took was for her to sing that jazz! If she were a place she would be a pop-art designer loft in Soho.
If she were a mood, it would be cool funk imbued with whimsical groove. What impresses me about Sonia is that she is totally focused, she knows where the music is leading her and with a natural mastery she takes you just where she wants you to go.
