Yundi Live In Beijing captures the full live experience of Yundi’s May 2010 concert in China’s extraordinary new National Centre of the Performing Arts in Beijing. The Chinese pianist, a superstar in his homeland, performed the recital in the year marking the 200th anniversary of Chopin’s death and the 10th anniversary of Yundi’s triumph as winner of the International Frédéric Chopin Piano Competition. He had the triple distinctions of being the first First Prize winner in 15 years, the youngest winner ever and the first Chinese winner. Since his triumph at the competition at the age of 18, Yundi has championed the works of Chopin around the world. “I admire Chopin’s focus on the piano”, Yundi said recently, “but also the elegant style, which is what I seek and enjoy. This programme is my preview of Chopin.” The full concert repertoire consists of the Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor, four mazurkas, five nocturnes, the Polonaise Op. 53 and the Andante spianato & grande polonaise brilliante, as well as traditional Chinese encores that have been incredibly popular in his recitals around the world.
