From the Opera National de Paris, TDK presents Prokofiev's monumental opera War and Peace, in a tremendous production directed by Francesca Zambello.
Based on Tolstoy's famous novel, War and Peace is an opus of exceptional scale. Over 70 figures make up the enormous lyrical formation. The story tells of the fate of a Russian aristocrat, who is overcome with shock at Napoleon's invasion. The core of the drama, set against the backdrop of the war, is the passionate love between the young Natacha Rostov to the Prince Andrei Bolkonski.
"Olga Guriakova is as impulsive and romantic a Natasha Rostova as one could hope for, the baritone Nathan Gunn catches the right notes of Prince Andrei's hypersensitivity and military valor, while the tenor Robert Brubaker effectively conveys Pierre's combination of moral courage and hopelessly unmilitary demeanor. Elena Zaremba and Stefan Margita are brilliantly repulsive as the sister-brother team of Helene Bezukhova and Anatol Kuragin.
"Bertini conducted on the first night with admirable forward drive... while Zambello's staging is strong in delineating the relationships of the principal characters and in focusing on the strength of the Russian people under wartime stress." The International Herald Tribune
