Die Winterreise, D 911 - (1827)
On poems of Wilhelm Müller

Die Winterreise is one of the most desperate pieces of the composer. Schubert probably identified himself to the traveller, wounded by a love unshared. These poetries tell the story of a lonely traveller in the middle of the winter and raises existential issues.
Müller's texts are almost a poetic autobiography Schubert.
Thomas Bauer studied the power of words and music... and found with Jos van Immerseel a partner able to bring emotional background thanks to his mastery of forte-piano.
Thomas Bauer made himself an initiatory travel along the trans-Siberian Railway between Moscow and Pekin where he sung this Winterreise.

Thomas E. Bauer's versatility and unerring sense of style have made him one of the most sought-after baritones of the present day. He recently made his debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra (Bernard Haitink). In 2010 he will debut with the National Symphony in Washington (Ivan Fischer). He made his debut at the Salzburg Festival in 2006 in Salvatore Sciarrino's Quaderno di strada.
Klaus Voswinckel's documentary film,Winterreise ,Schubert in Siberia, recounts the story of Thomas E. Bauer's adventurous concert tour with the Trans-Siberian Railway from Moscow to Beijing. The film was shown several times on television.

2009 season he appeared in the title role in Peter Ruzicka's Celan at the Bremen Theater as well as at the Theater an der Wien in Peter Maxwell-Davies` 8 Songs For A Mad King. The theatre-ensemble La Fura dels Baus invited him for a production of Orff`s Carmina Burana (with TV). With fortepiano specialist Jos van Immerseel he recently performed at the Cité de la Musique in Paris, at the Bruges Concertgebouw and Brussels BOZAR.

His discography includes Beethoven`s 9th Symphony (van Immerseel), Bach Cantatas (Herreweghe), Vier Toteninseln (Kalitzke) and several Schumann Lied-CD`s. In 2010 Mendelssohn`s Eliah (C. Spering) and Zelenka`s Missa votiva (Bernius) will be released.
