The Great Minnesang Anthology has been compiled by the renowned medievalist and philologist professor Volker Mertens from recordings in the Christophorus archives and he has provided it with a comprehensive commentary.
Walther von der Vogelweide, Konrad von Würzburg, Frauenlob and songs from the Carmina burana manuscript mark the golden age of the Minnesang. While the classical Minnesang totally subordinated the melody to the lyrics, in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries the music took on ever greater significance. Oswald von Wolkenstein, the Monk of Salzburg, Neidhart von Reuental and Tannhäuser are the most important composers of this later period. Classical Minnesang with its noble and courtly forms and manners was now caricatured, spoiled, made fun of and transposed from the courtly into the peasant environment. There is hardly any effort to veil the erotic references.
