Andreas Goepfert was appointed court musician and first clarinetist at the Meiningen court in 1788 and ended up remaining there for the rest of his life, from 1793 with the title of »Cammermusicus.« His circumstances in Meiningen during the reign of George I, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen, were nevertheless not very happy. Although concert life experienced what seemed to be a great flourishing with the new accomplishments of the Enlightenment, Goepfert soon became conscious of the narrow limitations of this little residence and made many applications and petitions for permission to travel to continue his musical education – none of which were granted to him. He died in 1818 in Meiningen in a state of complete exhaustion, poverty, and artistic despair. He nevertheless composed a larger number of concertos (just how many is something that can no longer be ascertained) aiming at the sort of effect that was typical during the age of virtuosity and wrote his clarinet works to match his own virtuoso capabilities. The Leipziger Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung lauded his oeuvre with many favorable words and at the same time lamented his personal fate in an obituary. A virtuosic and rewarding rediscovery!
