This 2009 recording on the CPO label was a very pleasant suprise! It is a collection of solo cantatas for Bass-Baritone and Orchestra by Georg Philipp Telemann. Being a baritone himself, Telemann's insight into writing for this voice type is certainly evident through these five solo cantatas. The vocal lines fit the range perfectly. These pieces were very well composed, including the use of passion texts as the vocal dialogue, and easily rival the Bach passions and cantatas. The Accademia Daniel covers the orchestral side with ease and compassion, while baritone Klaus Mertens sings exquisitely throughout. This recording is perfectly suited for the Easter season, but is worth many repeat listenings throughout the year. An absolute gem of a disc!
