Ricercar Consort / La Pastorella

Telemann's fertile imagination continues to leave us amazed. Sonatas, concertos, trios and quartets all reveal a composer with a prolific output who had an especial skill in creating music that suited the particular instrument for which it was intended; given that Telemann could play a great many instruments, such a talent becomes comprehensible. Telemann intended these scores to be performed by both professional and amateur musicians of all levels; in the preface to his Tafelmusik he suggests that these works are also included amongst life's diversions, these including the pleasures of the table. Works by other composers contemporary with the Hamburg Kapellmeister have also been included for the greater pleasure of our ears in this compilation of re-releases from Ricercar's catalogue. This album of 7 CDs is the first of a new selection of re-releases from Ricercar's back catalogue at extremely affordable prices. This collection contains recordings of chamber music and music for larger groups by Georg Philipp Telemann that were made between 1988 and 1999. Alongside five CDs devoted exclusively to Telemann and almost every work for recorder that he composed are two other albums of music, one of music for French horn and the other of music for the rarer instruments of the flute family during the baroque period. The collection is naturally accompanied by extensive introductory material. Playing here under the aegis of the Ricercar Consort and La Pastorella, all the soloists who appear on these recordings are amongst the most renowned performers of music of the Baroque on historic instruments. What is also evident is the talented ear of Jérôme Lejeune, who placed his trust in all these young soloists at a time when they had not yet acquired the reputations as soloist or conductor that they have today; they include Philippe Pierlot (bass viol), François Fernandez (violin), Frédéric de Roos (recorder), Marc Minkowski (bassoon), Marc Hantai (transverse flute), Claude Maury (horn), Bernard Foccroulle (harpsichord), Marcel Ponseele (oboe) and Eric Hoeprich (clarinet).
