Composed a decade apart, Debussy and Ravel's string quartets make a very natural pair. Quatuor Arod celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2023 and, to mark the occasion, puts these two masterpieces of the Belle Époque in a contemporary context with a third work, Al Asr by the young French composer Benjamin Attahir. In 2017, Quatuor Arod gave the world premiere of Benjamin Attahir's Al Asr, a momentous work that draws its inspiration from Muslim afternoon prayers as well as the moment of intense heat midway between noon and sunset. "Al Asr is dedicated to my wonderful friends of Quatuor Arod," Attahir emphasized. "They have brought it to life in a way I would never have dared to dream". Erato is releasing a DVD of the documentary film about the Arod Quartet along with the CD. It is entitled Ménage à quatre and was directed by Bruno Monsaingeon. His first experience with the Quatuor Arod was a true discovery: "Have I ever heard before such pure attack, such dramatic power, such variety of timbre and dynamics - all combined with an amazing sensitivity to phrasing?".
