Heinz Holliger (Oboe), Anton Kernjak (Klavier)

In his Éventail de musique française, Swiss oboist and composer Heinz Holliger explores a broad selection of French works for oboe and piano in a wide-ranging program of music from the early 20th century. "The closeness of the oboe to the human voice gave me the idea," says Holliger in the CD's accompanying text, "to open up the colorful range of French music a little further by means of the still far too little known collection of Vocalises-Etudes." This extensive recital includes compositions by Ravel, Debussy, Milhaud, Saint-Saëns, Casadesus as well as Koechlin, Jolivet and Messiaen - Holliger also had personal relationships with several of the composers. Anton Kernjak, who was heard on Holliger's 2014 recording Aschenmusik, can be heard on the piano, while the French harpist Alice Belugou makes her contribution on André Jovilet's Controversia pour hautbois et harpe. The great richness of the 20th century oboe repertoire comes to the fore here, in captivating dialogs between Holliger and piano or harp. Éventail follows the release of Heinz Holliger's multi-award-winning opera Lunea from 2022.

Concerti.de 09/2023: "This "fan" presents beguiling original compositions and arrangements for oboe and piano, all of them masterfully realized. he performers each precisely capture the particular aesthetics, style, atmosphere and operating temperature of the different composer personalities.holliger allows his instrument to sing in many different ways and impressively depicts the moods of the pieces, working out the wit, drama, beguiling, dancing, dreamy and tricky aspects of the pieces, as well as the novelty of each piece. This is also achieved in duo with harpist Alice Belugou. This production never ceases to cast a spell over you." "... the cross-section of works for oboe or English horn and piano or harp by eight French composers recorded here impressively demonstrates that even as an 81-year-old he [Holliger] still effortlessly masters his instrument. In addition, he has an insatiable curiosity that repeatedly leads him to perform works by composers who are excluded from the imaginary canon of new music or whose works have hardly become known ..."
