Corinne Bailey Rae

Located in the Great Grand Crossing neighborhood on Chicago's south side, the Stony Island Arts Bank is a cathedral of black art, a curated collection of black archives featuring books, sculptures, records, furniture, and problematic objects from America's past. The Arts Bank is not only a place to archive, but also a place to meet. Bailey Rae attended and performed at the Black Artists Retreat there in 2017. The themes of the resulting album, Black Rainbows, are broad and based on encounters with objects at the Arts Bank. It takes us from the rock-hewn churches of Ethiopia to the journeys of the Black Pioneers Westward, from Miss New York Transit Queen 1957 to the way the sunset appears from Harriet Jacobs' loophole. "Black Rainbows" explores black womanhood, spellwork, inner space/outer space, time collapse and dealing with ancestors, the erasure of black childhood, and music as a vessel for transcendence. The project will be released in various forms - live performances, books, visuals, lectures, exhibitions and more.

"...a glowing tribute to African-American art marked by vulnerability as well as willpower, this is pure 'art as art can'." (GoodTimes, October/November 2023)
