"Mélusine" contains interpretations of nine songs whose origins date back to the 12th century. In addition, there are five original compositions by Cécile McLorin Salvant. The vocal language is mainly French, with English, Haitian Creole and the southern French language Occitan. "Mélusine" follows "Ghost Song," Salvant's debut for Nonesuch Records. The album received two Grammy nominations and worldwide critical acclaim. The New York Times ranked it among the best albums of the year, as did radio station NPR. Salvant is a U.S. citizen with French-Haitian roots. For her, the character Mélusine also represents the feeling of being "a hybrid, a mixture of different cultures. I experienced that not only as an immigrant child, but also as someone from a family that is ethnically mixed and from different countries. There were always different languages spoken in my home."
