urandot with a star cast - reference recording with Pappano, Kaufmann and Radvanovsky "This Turandot promises to be one of the best recordings of recent years!" wrote the opera magazine OperaWire after the concert performance in Rome in early 2022. No less than two world stars made their role debuts in Puccini's dramatic opera under the baton of Sir Antonio Pappano: Jonas Kaufmann as Calaf and Sondra Radvanovsky in the title role of the cruel Chinese princess Turandot. The Italian daily Avvenire celebrated the U.S. soprano as the "discovery of the evening," saying "her voice has frost and fire, radiance and granite-like top notes." Now the production is released as a recording. It was also Antonio Pappano's first time conducting the opera: "Turandot is imbued with a beautiful subtlety that emerges in an opera full of biting irony. Puccini moves between tragedy and lightness, I like that very much!". The conductor opted for the rarely performed unabridged finale, written by Franco Alfano from Puccini's notes due to his sudden death. Just in time for the 100th anniversary of the composer's death (November 29, 2024), Puccini's last great opera is now appearing with a glittering cast - right down to the supporting roles, all the parts are embodied by international opera stars: In addition to Sondra Radvanovsky and tenor Jonas Kaufmann, Ermonela Jaho, Michele Pertusi, Mattia Olivieri and Michael Spyres will sing. Sir Antonio Pappano conducts the ensembles Orchestra e Coro dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia.

"With Sondra Radvanovsky, who lends Turandot an astonishing amount of piano warmth, and Jonas Kaufmann as Calàf, both debutants, the action is furious. And after the tender Liù Ermonela Jaho has given her last death sigh, there follows, for the first time in a complete recording, the complete Alfano finale. This harmonically dimensioned, lyrically silvery conclusion, sparkling once again in soft pentatonics, is a stunner.and not only there, but also in Pappano's sovereignly modernistic, yet sonorously sensual approach, it becomes clear: 'Turandot' can be so much more than a pale love-and-death parable and an exotic decal of the Far East.differentiated playing technique."
