Avi Avital, Il Giardino Armonico, Giovanni Antonini

With his album "Concertos", the charismatic mandolinist Avi Avital fulfills a dream and finally works together with the renowned ensemble for historical instruments "Il Giardino Armonico" and its conductor and founder Giovanni Antonini. Together they will perform three concertos for mandolin by Emanuele Barbella, Giovanni Paisiello and Johann Nepomuk Hummel as well as Avital's own arrangements of concertos by J. S. Bach and Vivaldi. Two of the three original works for mandolin come from Naples. Neapolitan culture is full of color, emotion and theatricality; qualities that are reflected in Avital's performance. Avital describes his arrangement of the well-known Concerto for Violin and Oboe, BWV 1060R by J. S. Bach as a lighter and brighter version for mandolin and recorder, with Avital's soloist colleague being Giovanni Antonini himself. And Avital has long had clear ideas about the performance of his favorite work by Vivaldi, the Concerto in B minor for four violins, RV 580. With multi-track recordings, Avital was able to interpret all four parts himself, on four different mandolins and two mandolas. As a result, each part takes on a different color and a specific character. "I'm proud of the result," says Avital. "You feel like you're in a live performance, as if there are soloists communicating with each other." In Avital's hands, the mandolin once again finds its rightful place in classical music.

Concerti Winter 2023/24: "Whether trills or modulations: Avi Avital plays with great agility, but never superficially virtuosic. His dynamic gradations alone are too precise for that. Whether in the fast or slow movements: Orchestra and soloist find a common inhalation and exhalation, cantabile lines and glittering accents. As a result, this recording sounds as concise as it is colorful, with neither Bach nor Hummel lacking in direct gestures and indirect illumination. Not for a moment is the recording geared towards clumsy audience seduction."
