Flashback 2023: On May 15, 1953, five of jazz's most influential musicians - Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, Max Roach and Bud Powell - met at Massey Hall in Toronto for their first and only known recording as a quintet. Although only a small audience had the opportunity to experience this historic evening in person, it was captured on tape. The resulting album, The Quintet: Jazz at Massey Hall, became one of the genre's most important and celebrated releases. Craft Recordings commemorates the 70th anniversary of this unique concert (2023) with Hot House: The Complete Jazz at Massey Hall Recordings, a definitive collection that presents all of the material from the evening recorded by the members of the Quintet. The three LPs, two CDs and digital version will be released in November 2023 and are available for pre-order starting today. They include a meticulous 24-bit audio restoration and remastering by Grammy-winning engineer Paul Blakemore. The vinyl edition lacquers were cut by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio and pressed on 180-gram vinyl. To celebrate the announcement, fans can stream or download "Wee" (Allen's Alley)" (without overdub) featuring all five members of the quintet. Rounding out both formats are rare photos from the evening and two essays that offer fascinating behind-the-scenes stories. The first is by David Scharf, whose father, Alan Scharf, was one of the concert's organizers and one of the photographers who documented the event. The second is by Don Brown, a visitor to the concert, who provides a compelling account of the evening. This 19-track box set includes the quintet's original 12-inch LP from Debut Records (with bass overdubs by Mingus), plus all six of the quintet's tracks without overdubs, plus performances by the Powell/Mingus/Roach trio and Roach's "Drum Conversation." As a result, this is the complete collection of recordings made by these five jazz legends on this extraordinary evening - and with the latest technology in audio restoration, the best listening experience yet.
