In November 2018, Chick Corea - the revered 27-time Grammy winner and National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master - was honored to perform with the Orchestra da Camera Della Sardegna in Mogoro, Sardinia, as a special guest artist for the 11th Annual Cultural Festival. This live recording captures a very special evening that was close to Corea's heart. Corea had collaborated with orchestras on numerous occasions and held a deep appreciation for classical music. Through his work as a composer and performer, he sought to bridge the gap between genres by internalizing the universality and enduring power of music to communicate and move something, whether through a jazz medium, a classical medium, or something in between. Corea was particularly proud of that evening's performance, and he wanted to officially release the set as an album as well. Corea's unique vision of classical performance shines through in these spirited interpretations of two of his favorite composers. His distinctive approach adds a touch of playfulness without sacrificing integrity and reverence for the music. On the Mozart piece, Corea takes liberties and adds flourishes as one imagines Mozart might have done in his time. With Gershwin, he literally plays Gershwin's passages and plays with them. Essentially, he improvises on Gershwin's improvisations. Author and historian Robin D. G. Kelley rounds out the package with his extensive, superb notes that give the listener an even better understanding of Chick and the history behind these pieces. The recording captures the essence of Chick's tireless creative vision, his strong classical sensibility, and his undeniable genius as a performer and improviser. It is a testament to all the musical areas he touched in his career and his legacy as an artist who could do it all.
