The Gurdjieff Ensemble, National Chamber Choir of Armenia, Levon Eskenian

Zartir is now the third recording by the Gurdjieff Ensemble founded by Levon Eskenian and presents a unique program. On the album, on the one hand, the music of writer and composer G. I. Gurdjieff is reinterpreted on folk instruments, and on the other hand, Gurdjieff is also framed in the tradition of Armenian bards and troubadours such as Ashugh Jivani, Baghdasar Tbir and the legendary Sayat-Nova. Pieces for sacred dances are also featured here, providing highlights such as The Great Prayer - a moving collaboration between the Gurdjieff Ensemble and the National Chamber Choir of Armenia that draws on ritual music from various religions. Arranger Eskenian says, "I believe The Great Prayer is more than just a 'composition.' It is one of the most profound and transformative pieces I have encountered in Gurdjieff's work." Zartir was recorded in Yerevan in 2021 and mixed and finished in Munich in November 2022 by Levon Eskenian, Tigran Kuzikyan and Manfred Eicher.
