Pierre Schaeffer Pierre Henry

Musique concrète was invented in 1948 by Pierre Schaeffer, who at that time was the head of a small research team at French national radio, the “Radio diffusion française.” His invention was a new form of musical expression that consisted in composing based on recorded sounds of various origins that were mixed, structured and combined to create a new artistic language. This “concrete” music was resolutely acoustic, as opposed to electronic, and Schaeffer was its principal architect together with Pierre Henry. It was an experimental form anchored in the post-war era, and it later gave birth to “acousmatic” music, with considerable influence on all experimental forms up to and including modern pop and the sampling that is present in electro and hip hop. The overview that Olivier Julien has prepared here looks back on the compositions of one of the cornerstones of the music of the avant-garde in the 20th century. Patrick FRÉMEAUX
