Thomas Zehetmair (Violine & Dirigat), Ruth Killius (Viola), Northern Sinfonia

Thomas Zehetmair calls this impressive New Series album "both a résumé and a departure" - a summation of his work with the Royal Northern Sinfonia. In his years as musical director of the British chamber orchestra, Zehetmair has been known both for incorporating compelling new music into the repertoire and for the sensitive performances of classical and contemporary compositions he has brought to the stage with the orchestra - qualities that are clearly evident on this concert recording from The Sage, Gateshead. The album opens with John Casken's double concerto That Subtle Knot, written in 2012-13 for Zehetmair, Ruth Killius and the Northern Sinfonia. Inspired by the poetry of John Donne, the composition draws a wide arc between the English Renaissance and the music of today. Ruth Killius shines in an exhilarating interpretation of Bartók's Viola Concerto, and as conductor Zehetmair brings to full fruition what Giselher Schubert, in the CD's accompanying text, calls the "fulminant impetus" of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. Reviews "Musically, this recording shows what subtle, never ostensibly stirring, but rather coherent interpretations Thomas Zehetmair is capable of." (FONO FORUM, April 2023) "Thomas Zehetmair's final concert as principal conductor of the British Northern Sinfonia turns out to be a brilliant stroke of genius." (concerti)
