Danish String Quartet - Prism V
Label: ECM Catalog: 4858469 Format: CD Danish String QuartetThe Danish String Quartet brings its highly acclaimed Prism project to a close. Each edition of the series pairs a particular Bach fugue with a late Beethoven quartet, which in turn is paired with a quartet by a later master: "A ray of music is split through the prism of Beethoven," according to the Danes. "The whole approach invites active, engaged listening," says The Guardian. "The group plays with virtuosity, intensity and tenderness." The project was eight years in the making. In the fifth and final edition, Johann Sebastian Bach's chorale prelude Vor deinen Thron tret ich hiermit "wie eine Blume" (as Paul Griffiths writes in the booklet) opens to introduce Ludwig van Beethoven's String Quartet No. 16 in F major. Anton Webern's early string quartet, composed in 1905 and inspired by both Beethoven and Schoenberg, follows, and the program returns to Bach with Contrapunctus 14 from Die Kunst der Fuge.
