NUC" is an album of compositions by Anna Meredith, rearranged by the Ligeti Quartet's violist Richard Jones (who has worked with Alex Turner, Jessie Ware and The Waeve) in collaboration with Meredith herself. Formed in 2010, the London-based ensemble stands in stark contrast to the dusty, antiquated image of the classical string quartet: instead, it's an urgent, disruptive, and restlessly creative juggernaut that redefines the sonic and conceptual parameters of what can be achieved with these raw materials. 'NUC' marks the exciting alignment of the two camps' aesthetics, with the permanence and formal playfulness of Meredith's core compositions enhanced by the transgressive, unorthodox touch of the Ligeti Quartet's interpretations. Richard Jones explains, "If you're able to use avant-garde techniques in a pop context, then maybe you can appeal to more people. The music industry worries about shutting people out if they do something that doesn't really fit into either camp, but I'm much more optimistic about it, which is that you can appeal to people from both camps." In just a few recording sessions in the studio, "Nuc" was born, an album named after the beekeeper term for a small nucleus of pressing, anxious activity in which a central queen bee is swarmed by a roving, searching mass of life. The analogy serves as a unifying mantra for the project - opening track "Tuggemo," which translates from Old Gaelic as "swarm," serves as the lead single, its twitching, manic energy easily evoking the chaos of the hive.
