The ensemble featuring the musicians Mitsuru Shiogai (violin), Ulrich Horn (cello) and Eberhard Hasenfratz is distinguished by its unique sound, not least because the two string instruments come from the same skilled hand: the violin maker Giovanni Gagliano from the end of the 18th century. The two framing works on the CD approach the theme of "night" from different angles: Schoenberg's "Transfigured Night" is a passionate, late-Romantic narrative, while Schubert's "Notturno" is a moment of early-Romantic eternity.
