Jazz bass icon Buster Williams celebrated his 80th birthday in April 2022 - now his new album is released with some vocal hits by Jean Baylor, such as "Estate." "Unalome" is a symbol with a lotus flower that represents "individual transcendence and the path to enlightenment throughout life." "It seemed to perfectly express the mood or collective spirit of the music on this particular project," says Buster Williams. "Unalome," to be released Feb. 24, features the bassist with longtime bandmates George Colligan and Lenny White, as well as saxophonist Bruce Williams and vibraphonist Stefon Harris. The band is also joined by vocalist Jean Baylor, who delivers beautiful vocals on standards and originals. "In The Middle of a Rainbow" is a new ballad written by Williams. While the melody had been with him for a while, he wrote the lyrics on the way to the studio. Turning words into music was another step in his musical growth. The rest of "Unalome" features more Williams originals, including a repeat of "Tayamisha" from his 1975 album Pinnacle and jazz standards like "Estate" and "I've Got The World on a String." Speaking of which, if you don't know Williams, check out the documentary Buster Williams: Bass to Infinity.
