Matthias Goerne, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen

Matthias Goerne, one of the great interpreters of Schubert's songs, makes a remarkable debut with his latest album for Deutsche Grammophon: The German baritone presents Franz's Schubert songs in completely new versions for voice and orchestra. The pieces were arranged by Goerne's longtime recital partner Alexander Schmalcz. The carefully assembled selection of 19 songs includes well-known songs such as "An Silvia," "Der Tod und das Mädchen," and "Erlkönig," as well as the three sublime "Gesänge des Harfners," whose texts come from Goethe's "Wilhelm Meister." The new orchestrations are brought to life by the musicians of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. "Schubert Revisited" reflects Goerne's deep sense of Schubert's unique blend of formal logic, expressive nuance and musical invention. The emotional impact of Goerne's interpretations is enriched here by the wide range of instrumental colors and textures Schmalcz brings to the album's selection of songs. "The selection of songs takes on a sonic dimension that the piano cannot portray in this way. That doesn't mean it's better, but different," the singer says.
