Konstantin Reymaier (Neue Orgel Stephansdom Wien)

2022 marks the 200th anniversary of César Franck's birth. Franck was undoubtedly one of the most important composers in France. His ancestors came from Germany, he himself was born in Belgium and spent most of his life in Paris. An impressive oeuvre with works for orchestra, choir, chamber music, piano and organ testifies to his enormous creative power. Wagner's harmonies gave his music important impulses, by means of which he found his own tonal language, which in turn significantly influenced the development of French music Among his finest works are two cycles for organ, the Trois Pièces and the Trois Chorals. The first cycle was written on the occasion of the inauguration of a new instrument for the concert hall of the Trocadero Palace. The three chorales, as his opus ultimum, represent his musical testament, so to speak. This recording does not use a historical instrument, as most do, but a new one: the giant organ in Vienna's St. Stephen's Cathedral, completed in 2020. It sounds different from 19th-century French organs, of course, but is nevertheless suited to Franck's music and allows his orchestral writing to shine in its own light.
