"Monk has mapped a world that has never quite existed in the history of art. Her works, at once visceral and ethereal, raw and enraptured, banish the false complexities of urban life to reveal a kind of subterranean civilization that sings, dances and meditates on timeless forces." (Alex Ross, The New Yorker) Meredith Monk - The Recordings, a limited edition 13-CD box set containing all of Meredith Monk's previous recordings from the ECM New Series, is released to celebrate the composer and singer's 80th birthday. Meredith was the first composer to record under her own name on ECM Records, and has been releasing her music on the label since the album Dolmen Music in 1981. This beautifully designed box set includes a 300-page book reproducing all the original liner notes, as well as new lyrics and interviews. In addition, the book contains an introductory essay by Frank J. Oteri, "The Worlds of Meredith Monk," an autobiographical text by Meredith entitled "The Soul's Messenger," and a foreword by Manfred Eicher. Also: many photos (some previously unpublished), quotes from the press, archival documents.
