"Ruins and Remains" is Wolfert Brederode's 2022 album from his project with drummer Joost Lijbaart and the Matangi Quartet. It is a musical and personal contemplation on the destructive side of man and nature, but also an ode to their fragility and resilience, which now, after a pandemic and during a new war in Europe, proves to be an even more topical issue. Says Wolfert, "I see 'Ruins and Remains' as an evolving suite: with recurring leitmotifs, key centers, harmonic progressions, but with freedom for us to add or omit parts, stretch or shorten them, or connect them through free improvisations. This allows us to let the music breathe and transform without losing its essence." In addition to their own projects such as "Under the Surface" and the Wolfert Brederode Trio, Joost and Wolfert have collaborated in various ensembles over the past fifteen years and also form a duo. Their album "One" (Jazz in Motion Records) received unanimous praise from the press. The Matangi Quartet has been one of the leading string quartets in the Dutch music scene for over two decades, with a wide variety of projects and collaborations. All musicians have performed in various concert, dance and theater productions For Matangi's album "Jazzics" Wolfert also composed the spiritual and melancholic work "Shadowchild". With "Ruins and Remains" a long-cherished wish comes true to present together an idiosyncratic musical universe in an enigmatic concert program. Last August, the music was recorded at Sendesaal Bremen with Manfred Eicher as producer, and the album will be Wolfert's fourth as a leader on ECM Records.
