Bobby Watson with his album "Back Home in Kansas City," which he wrote in well-deserved retirement "The alto saxophone is a singing horn," says Bobby Watson, and the great saxophonist is at his best on his latest album, Back Home in Kansas City. The album, due out in October 2022 via Smoke Sessions Records, features an all-star quintet with Watson's longtime rhythm section of bassist Curtis Lundy and drummer Victor Jones, along with pianist Cyrus Chestnut and trumpeter Jeremy Pelt As the title suggests, "Back Home in Kansas City" is also a tribute to Watson's hometown and its rich musical heritage. The saxophonist grew up in Kansas City, studied at the University of Miami and then made a name for himself in New York City for a quarter century. In 2000, he returned to his hometown to serve as director of jazz studies at the Conservatory of Music & Dance at the University of Missouri - Kansas City. he retired 20 years later.
