Elisabeth Leonska

Piano Sonatas by W. A. Mozart in a Complete Edition by Elisabeth Leonskaja "A kaleidoscopic Mozart with the wisdom and experience of a lifetime," is how the British cultural website The Arts Desk described Elizabeth Leonskaja's interpretation of Mozart. This year (2021), the grande dame of the piano has recorded the Austrian's complete piano sonatas. As multifaceted as Mozart's sonatas are, they actually seem to encompass the moods of an entire life: they range from the serious, innocent Piano Sonata in F Major, K. 332, to the lilting, dance-like Piece, K. 333, to the energetic Rondo alla Turca, probably Mozart's most famous piano piece. But the composer also processed personal experiences in the works. The Piano Sonata in A minor K. 310, for example, is Mozart's most somber sonata; it was written under the impression of his mother's unexpected death To ferret out the touching layers of meaning behind the fleet-footed elegance of Mozart's compositions certainly requires a little wisdom of age. Elisabeth Leonskaja, an artist far from any self-dramatization and full of devotion to the work, perhaps best gets to the bottom of the profound mischievousness. After all, it is probably as Mozart himself stated: "The music is not in the notes, but in the silence between them."
