Countertenor arias of Italian baroque music Florence, Venice and Naples are the setting, here developed around 1600 a new art form and drove its first flowering in the following two centuries: the opera. With the album "Tormento dʼamore" Ian Bostridge sets out on the trail of the first great opera tenors of that time. The world-famous British opera and song interpreter finds support for his project in the original sound ensemble Cappella Neapolitana, which specializes in the recovery of long-forgotten musical treasures. The ensemble also contributed its own rediscovery and world premiere recording for the album, which had lain hidden for centuries in a monastery library in Naples. With the selection of arias, the musicians want to prove that the Italian tenor singers of the 17th and 18th centuries were able to hold their own against the fierce competition of the celebrated castrati. And so, for the album, Ian Bostridge slips into heroic and title roles that gifted composers such as Leonardo Vinci, Francesco Cavalli and Antonio Vivaldi wrote for their tenors of the time.
