The Nutmegs were formed by brothers Leroy and James Griffin in New Haven, Connecticut in 1953. Signed to the Herald label they released a number of fabulous songs during their career including the classic "Story Untold" in April 1955 which was considered the best song the label ever produced both technically and musically. By 1957 the writing was on the wall when the classic "Whispering Sorrows" failed to chart and in 1958 their career came to a tragic end when leader and main songwriter Leroy Griffin was killed in an accident in Koppers Coke, New Haven. They did however lay the foundations for a cappella singing when a number of Griffins' songs were roughly recorded in this style and later released creating a marketplace for a cappella vocal group music. Meanwhile out of Toronto came The Diamonds who were effectively a covers band that emerged from a local television talent show. In the time honoured tradition of white groups making black music palatable to white audiences The Diamonds had a string of hits during their career. Signing to Coral Records in 1955 we include such classics as "Why Do Fools Fall In Love", "Church Bells May Ring", "Words Of Love", "The Stroll" and two Doo Wop standards in "Silhouettes" and "Little Darlin'". Their career lasted until the early sixties when the music changed forever but like many groups of the era they made a second career for themselves on the "oldies" revival circuit.
