In the words of The Midnighters, Hank Ballard, The Essential Doo Wop series gets "kinda lowdown and sexy" with the release of our latest compilation "Hesitatin' Fool". "Work With Me Annie" started life as "Sock It To Me Mary" before becoming a No.1 hit for the second time in 1954 when Hank Ballard replaced Charles Sutton as lead singer. Explicit lyrics and a live show that included among other more unmentionable things, the dropping of trousers, ensured that no white band would dare cover this classic track! Our Doo Wop round up continues over at Apollo Records where we can listen to The Three Riffs, The Striders, The Claremonts and The Cellos whose "Girlie That I Love" deserved to be a bigger hit and The Delroys whose "Bermuda Shorts" broke in Detroit, but only for a short time. Bobby Robinson, meanwhile continued his one man record industry with his labels Red Robin and Whirlin' Disc and here we feature a selection including The Empires, The Serenaders, The Rainbows, The Topps, The Scarlets and The Sequins. Not all hits but certainly all great songs. We discover a similar story over at Chicago's Parrot label where terrific songs by The Five Thrills, The Earls, The Orchids, The Rockettes and The Magnificents all left the charts relatively untroubled. We complete this volume in our series with more unsung heroes of Doo Wop from the oddly named The Copesetics, to The Leaders, The Montclairs, The True Loves and The Four Fellows who made their Glory records debut with "I Wish I Didn't Love You So."
