Released by in 1958 - three years afterParker's untimely death at the age of 34 - SwedishSchnapps compiles two complete 1951 sessionsfrom which the master takes had previously beenreleased as 78rpm singles, and later put togetheron the 1955 Clef Records LP The Magnifi centCharlie Parker (MG C-646). While one datefeatures Red Rodney (the regular trumpeter fromParker's quintet during that time), the other is areunion session featuring drummer Max Roachand, more importantly, trumpeter Miles Davis (whohad left Bird's group more than a year before). Onthat same day, Miles would record his fi rst studiosession for Prestige and would play the pianoon "I Know" from Sonny Rollins' fi rst date as aleader. An album consisting primarily of variationson the blues, Swedish Schnapps also includesBird's defi nitive reading of "Lover Man", a songhe insisted on recording again after the tormented1946 Dial version was issued against his will.
