"These songs have quite amazing histories: One began in 1850 as a song of longing in the American Civil War; today it is considered a folk song in China and Japan - each under a different name," says Gerald Wirth, artistic director of the Vienna Boys' Choir. seventeen tracks are first recordings, including Willie Nelson's "On the Road Again," "La paloma" and - perhaps the song of the pandemic - the whaler's shanty "Wellerman." The Boys' Choir have already put a version of it on the web, and the clip has now reached over 500,000 clicks. The Boys' Choir are hoping for similar success with their summer video for Day-dah Light, the original Banana Boat song from Jamaica, in which a whole choir stands in the middle of Lake Neusiedl. Music from different cultures unites the emotion In the spirit of the Together idea, the Vienna Boys' Choir invited top-class guests. The virtuosos of the Janoska Ensemble - the brothers Ondrej, Roman and František Janoska with brother-in-law Julius Darvas - are present for four titles at once, and they accompany the Boys' Choir congenially and furiously on "Dona dona", "Dorogoi dlinnoyu", "Niška banja" and "Üsküdar'a gider iken". František Janoska, who is responsible for the instrumental arrangements: "It was a great recording session for us and an inspiring collaboration to make music with these young talented singers: Even though we played each take completely differently, they all got along perfectly with our Janoska style. Conclusion: wonderful music making on a high level with a desire to continue!" For the Indian Bhajan "Raghupati Raghav Raj Ram" - with a text by Mahatma Gandhi -, for the old Qawwali "Man kunto maula", for the African "Sesivuma sigiya" and "Day-dah Light" the percussion specialists Gerhard Reiter and Andreas Huber from Upper Austria were specially invited, for the Japanese songs "Kojo no tsuki" (The Moon over the Castle Ruin) and "Ryoshu" (The Melancholy of the Journey) the shakuhachi player Dieter Strehly and for the right Chinese touch in "Song Bie / Li Ge" (Farewell to Friends) the guzheng player Ming Wang. Henry Purcell's elegiac "Music for a While" is accompanied by Jörg Ulrich Krah on cello and Jeremy Joseph on organ. "In addition, we sing a lot of a cappella on this album," Gerald Wirth is pleased to say, "All the active choirboys were involved, all with ardor. It is a real Together. Songs with which we can show how different cultures mix, how music actually achieves the same thing in all cultures - namely, depicting the emotions that connect us humans. That's universal, and that has tremendous power." With their new album, the Vienna Boys' Choir want to inspire hope and courage.
