After the release of the soundtrack of Matthias & Maxime in 2019, the new LP "Aubades" by Jean-Michel Blais is now released. The new album of the Montreal-based icon of modern-classical music shows a new side of the artist, or as he says. In addition to the decision to write for an ensemble, Blais also set other parameters for the project. "With this album, I definitely responded to certain trends in classical music," Blais says. "For example, the fact that solo piano tends to always sound melancholy. That's good, but I was already doing that; I wanted to go beyond that. It was also the first time I wrote so much in major rather than minor. So much piano music, especially in the modern classical music world, is in a minor key. I wanted to go there without being cheesy. What I loved most during that time was walking or biking while listening to my demos and watching nature come back to the city while it was so quiet. Nature was just getting out of control." Blais hesitates to call "Aubades" a pandemic album or even a breakup album. "These are things we all experience," he says. "But at the same time, it was a very fertile moment of creativity for me."
