A big red 8 is emblazoned on the cover of saxophonist, composer and jazz mystic Charles Lloyd's new live album, which Blue Note Records is releasing in a variety of formats The reason for the album title and the extraordinarily wide-ranging release is obvious: on March 15, 2018, Lloyd celebrated 80th birthday in his hometown of Santa Barbara, on the stage of the Lobero Theatre, with a group of close musical friends including guitarist Julian Lage, pianist Gerald Clayton, bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Eric Harland. They were joined by guest organist Booker T. Jones and Blue Note president Don Was on bass "8: Kindred Spirits - Live From The Lobero" is a documentary of an irretrievable evening and an incomparable jazz artist.
