In 1964, Bill Evans released the album "Trio 64." In 2021, it has now been reissued on vinyl once again, as part of Verve's Acoustic Sounds series. The Acoustic Sounds series presents regular reissues from the world's finest and historically important jazz records. Mastered by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound from the original analogue tapes, they appear on 180-gram LPs in gatefold covers. As one of the most important pianists of modern jazz, Bill Evans inspired a whole generation of pianists who were to follow him. Throughout his career, he played continuously in the classic jazz trio setting. From 1956 until his death in 1980, some 20 different musicians were thus at his side in changing ensembles. In 1964, they included bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Paul Motian. In December 1963, they recorded the album "Trio 64" together at Webster Hall in New York City. The recording was a reunion with his old sideman Motian, who had already contributed to his 1956 debut "New Jazz Conceptions". However, this was the first and only recorded work with the talented bassist Gary Peacock. All the more astonishing is the perfect, harmonious interplay of the musicians. "Trio 64" was Evans' first trio album after moving from Riverside Records to his new label, Verve. It is still considered one of Evans' best trio sessions. The song selection makes it clear how well Evans was able to transform even the most routine pop songs of the time into his own modern jazz versions. And so the trio took pieces like Bing Crosby's "Dancing In The Dark", the theme tune of the animated series "Little Lulu" or, fittingly for the pre-Christmas recording session, "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" as a template for their new interpretations. The complete tracklisting of "Trio 64" can be found below.
