When the great Russian cellist and conductor Mstislav Rostropovich died in 2007, he had not only gained the greatest reputation as a musician. Persecuted in the Soviet Union, he stood up for democracy and human rights. His performance for a united Berlin at the open Wall at Check-point Charlie is unforgotten. In 1995 Rostropovich, undisputedly one of the best cellists in the world, surprised everyone with a very special recording. For the first time in his career, he recorded the most famous repertoire for his instrument: the six suites for solo cello by Johann Sebastian Bach - now released as a deluxe 4-LP vinyl set.
