Joe Lovano: Garden Of Expression (180g)
Joe Lovano Marilyn Crispell Carmen Castaldi
Joe Lovano's trio Tapestry's debut album was one of the most talked about releases of 2019, and the trio's musical concept - the 'Boston Globe' spoke of "whispered assurance, lyricism, and tension" - is taken to the next level on his second album Garden of Expression, a recording distinguished by its intense focus. Lovano, a saxophonist whose range extends throughout the history of modern jazz and beyond, plays with extraordinary sensitivity in Trio Tapestry. And the music he writes for this group - delicately melodic or declamatory, harmonically open, rhythmically free, and spiritually stimulating - inspires subtle and sophisticated responses from his partners. Joe describes their interaction as "magical." Carmen Castaldi's space-conscious approach to percussion refines an improvisatory understanding that he and Lovano have shared since the 1970s. The trio is also a wonderful context for Marilyn Crispell's solos, countermelodies and improvisatory flourishes, her sense of timbre helping the group's chamber-music character to blossom The details of the music are beautifully brought out in this recording, made in the very direct acoustic of the Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI in Lugano and produced by Manfred Eicher.
