Acoustic Sounds Series
The Max Roach-Clifford Brown Quintet began its activities in early 1954 with tenor saxophonist Teddy Edwards, bassist George Bledsoe and pianist Carl Perkins. Shortly afterwards Edwards, Perkins and Bledsoe left the group. The piano and bass chairs were soon occupied by pianist Richie Powell (Bud Powell's younger brother), bassist George Morrow and tenor saxophonist Harold Land The sessions with Land on tenor saxophone were released on the albums Clifford Brown & Max Roach, Brown & Roach Inc. and the present study in Brown. In late 1955 Land was forced to return to Los Angeles for family reasons, which created the conditions for young Sonny Rollins to take his place. However, this fantastic formation was to end in tragedy, as Clifford Brown died in a car accident (at the age of 25) in the early hours of June 26, 1956, together with the pianist Richie Powell and his wife. To stand out from the mass of countless LP re-releases, there is only one recipe: Quality! Audiophile pressings and high-quality cover processing are the "crown of creation" in vinyl. That audiophile LPs are in demand in the jazz field is proven by the continuing success of the BLUE NOTE TONE POET series. With the ACOUSTIC SOUNDS SERIES, the Verve label is now playing in this quality and price range . The classics have never been manufactured as exquisitely as here: mastered without digital intermediate steps from the original analogue tapes, pressed in finest 180g vinyl by Quality Record Pressings and packed in sturdy tip-on-gatefold sleeves, printed and processed at Stoughton Printing Co. The entire production chain is supervised by the legendary Chad Kassem from the audiophile LP label Acoustic Sounds.
