The Thomanerchor is without doubt one of the most famous choirs in the world. And the vocal works of the great Thomaskantor Johann Sebastian Bach, such as the St. John Passion, belong to the iron musical stock of the boys' ensemble from Leipzig. Like the sister work, the St. Matthew Passion, it tells of Christ's passion in all musical intensity. These include, for example, the alto aria "Es ist vollbracht" ("It is done") or "Erwäge, wie sein blutgefärbter Rücken" ("Consider how his bloodstained back") for tenor. The role of the narrative and commentary soloist is central. In this legendary recording from 1976, Peter Schreier sings one of his outstanding roles here, in which he was a true scale actor for decades. Other renowned soloists include soprano Arleen Auger, one of the outstanding oratorio singers, and Theo Adam, bass-powerful primordial rock as Jesus. Hans-Joachim Rotzsch, the then long-time Thomaskantor, conducts the St. Thomas Boys Choir and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, who literally have Bach in their blood.
