Recorded in 1968, this version still remains quintessential of Mozart's Figaro. Under the baton of the great Karl Böhm, the choir and orchestra of Deutsche Oper Berlin are in top form from the downbeat of the overture. The cast is a veritable all-star team of the German singers of the time. Hermann Prey and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau headline the leads as Figaro and Count Almaviva respectively. It is a luxury to have two of the greatest baritones of our time in two of the greatest baritone roles ever written. Edith Mathis is an energetic Susanna, while Gundula Janowitz, an empathetic Countess. Tatiana Troyanos is perfectly cast as Cherubino. This 3-CD set features the full opera, without cuts, so we get to hear the entirety of Mozart's music. Truly, one of the finest opera recordings ever made.
