David Maslanka’s wind band music has been amongst the most popular and most oft performed works in the genre. The excitement, energy and emotion his compositions elicit from audiences as well as musicians is unparalleled. The works on this album are excellent examples of how his compositions are able to draw our emotions in all directions. His humor is displayed throughout “The Seeker.” His love, longing and heartache for his wife, Allison (who passed 35 days before David) is displayed in Movement One of Symphony No. 10. His admiration, love, and respect for his son, Matthew, shines in Movement Two. David’s compassion and his plea for peace and tolerance for all life and cultures, we hear in “Hymn for World Peace.” His spirituality can be heard in UFO Dreams.” David had the great gift of being able to channel emotions into music. David’s untimely passing in August of 2017 was a huge loss for the world of wind music. His 10th Symphony was not completed at the time of his passing. His son, Matthew, took the sketches and notes his father left him and completed this masterwork in time for the World Premiere in Salt Lake City on April 3, 2018. Scott Hagen and his University of Utah Wind Ensemble gives an emotional and unforgettable performance of the Symphony. Any wind band aficionado would desire to have this album in their collection.
