Cyrano de Bergerac, a work written in 1897 by Edmond Rostand, renewed the theater of that era. For some it was the romance, the panache, and the courage that stimulated a “moral renewal” that drew them to this work. Others saw the reconciliation of the virtues of courage and abnegation, and sources of a moral force which advocates the responsibility of a man and his destiny. Whatever the reason, the key to Cyrano’s success, as well as that of all the “good” works, is the personal relatability of them. Jack London attended the American premiere of this work in 1898 and wrote: “Several pieces seem to contain my own thoughts, my own feelings.” Here, Edmond Rostand’s masterpiece is presented as it was interpreted by comedians of the French Comedy in 1955 in a production staged by Pierre Hiegel.
