Francesco Cavalli’s was the best-known opera composer of his time as well as choirmaster and organist at the Basilica of San Marco. His three act opera, L’Ormindo, is set in Fez in the ancient Kingdom of Mauretania. The opera was first performed in 1644 at the Teatro San Casaiano, Venice, the world’s first public opera house. After its first run, it was not revived until 1967 when it was performed at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera. The production heard on this release took place in September 1971 at the Teatro Musicale della Citta di Roma, Renato Fasano conducting. Vincenzo Manno takes the title role, joined by Alberto Rinaldi as Amida and Elena Zilia as Nerillo.
