The great variety of instruments in these quartets, ranging from instruments like transverse flute, recorder or violin to bassoon, oboe and basso continuo shows the proficiency of Telemanns writing, setting up different instruments in a way that their individual tonal characteristics are portrayed to the utmost extent – possibly due to his own skill of playing ten instruments himself, including trombone and French horn.
