Though Georg Schumann’s works were widely known and performed all over the world during his lifetime, he fell into obscurity over the intervening decades and is only now, some 65 years after his death, once again becoming recognised as a genius of the late Romantic era. His compositional style draws on Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms and Richard Strauss, but there is a unique voice and a distinctive harmonic language to his output. Nowhere is this more evident than in his songs. This release charts his development as a composer, presenting a selection of his greatest compositions for voice and piano in chronological order. All of these, with the sole exception of Mädchenlieder, Op.35, are premiere recordings. This wonderful recital is brilliantly performed by soprano Mary Nelson and pianist Mark Ford, and the disc booklet includes translations of all the song texts together with detailed notes.
