This 11-CD set contains all 27 "Ordres" for harpsichord by the great Francois Couperin. The "Ordres" were really collections of pieces, although they are sometimes thought of as "suites". But these collections are far more extensive (and varied) than the usual keyboard suite of the period. Most performers make a selection from them rather than play an entire "Ordre" in recital. On this recording, completion is the order of the day, so all the "Ordres" are presented in full. The performances and recordings are all top-notch. The works are performed on recently built instruments modeled on period harpsichords, and provided with historically accurate tunings, none of which are in equal temperment. Altogether a superb production, and the super-budget price is just the icing on the cake. All those who love Baroque harpsichord music will do well to pick up a copy of this set for their collections. - Tom Furgas |
