Vuola, Kari; Haavisto, Varpu
Gambist Varpu Haavisto and organist Kari Vuola present this new release, “Crossings.” At first glance, one would think this would be an album filled with Baroque-era compositions and transcriptions. This release, however, is unique in that it has taken two period instruments and brought them into the modern day. Each of these works was, in fact, composed in the twentieth century. The most well-known composer featured is Olivier Messiaen. The duo performs his work, “L’Ascension.” Other composers include Juhani Nuorvala and Olli Kortekangas. Kari Vuola is Finnish cantor and organist who has worked at the Naantali church since 1987. A graduate of the Sibelius Academy, he also serves Parainen Organ as artistic director. Varpu Haavisto is a professional Gambist and social activist who lives and works in Finland.
